Blues outlast Foresters 7-5 on Independence Day-Eve; End Winning Streak

By Aidan O’Neill

The Blues defeated the Foresters 7-5 on Wednesday evening in San Luis Obispo, dropping their first game in two weeks to their bitter rivals.

Heart and hustle was shown from the first pitch, as the Foresters offense got going immediately. In the top of the 1st, Kaden Petersen led off the game with an infield single, showcasing his speed down the baseline. Jonah Sebring was then plunked by a curveball on the helmet, and the line began to move. After Will Rogers’ strikeout, Jack Holman had a productive groundout that brought in the ’Sters first run. Up stepped Nolan Souza, who had been looking for one big swing to change his summer campaign, and he delivered with a frozen rope down the left field line, sneaking over the wall for an two-run opposite field home run. The Foresters led 3-0.

From this point the Foresters offense fell to a standstill, ultimately being held hitless till the 7th. Blues starter Logan Groff fanned 8 and kept San Luis Obispo within striking distance, where they capitalized during the middle innings. A 2 RBI triple from Cooper Whitton and hitting gave SLO led 4-3 entering the 7th.

The ‘Sters late effort gave them a lead entering the eighth, as Kaden Petersen and Daniel Patterson both had an RBI, but a couple of miscues gave the Blues an opportunity to take advantage, and they did so with clutch pinch hitting, taking a 7-5 into the ninth and holding on.

A Fourth of July classic is scheduled for 4:30pm at Eddie Matthews Field in the fourth game of the season between the Foresters and Blues. The season series is tied at 2-2.
