The Foresters were having so much fun in San Diego, they decided to stay for a little extra . . . extra innings, that is. Santa Barbara wrapped up a two-game sweep of the San Diego Waves with an 8-5 victory in 11 innings. The go-ahead run came in the final frame on a double by outfielder Colby Barrick to score catcher Kreston Woods.
The ’Sters got out quickly against Waves starter Emilio Esquibel, scoring four runs in the first inning (the second straight game S.B. has opened the scoring in the first). The ’Sters put together five straight two-out hits, with Codi Santana, Trevor Abrams, and Connor McManigal driving in the runs. McManigal’s single gave him three RBI for the series.
The Waves chipped away, though, slowing bringing in a tide of runs. Cody Crouse, back for his second summer in Santa Barbara, started and pitched five solid innings, giving up only three runs. Texas product Nick Kennedy took over for three more, during which the Waves took a 5-4 lead. The Foresters tied it up on a Bret Boswell double that scored Kyle Isbel, who had singled.
The teams went scoreless until the Foresters broke it open in the 11th. After Barrick’s drive gave Santa Barbara the lead, the ’Sters took advantage of some poor defense by the Waves to add some insurance runs. On a single by Jorge Garcia, his fourth hit of the day, Barrick scored. On the play, Boswell scored when the throw home eluded the Waves’ catcher.
Daniel Robert, who had taken over on the mound for Santa Barbara in the ninth, wrapped up three scoreless innings to earn the win.
Join the Foresters at their temporary home on Tuesday at Westmont College when they take on the Healdsburg Prune Packers. Game time is 5 pm.
