Souza Stirs It Up, Camarillo Shoves in Second Straight Shutout Win

By Jalen Kang

Nolan Souza homered and drove in 3 RBIs, Frank Camarillo tossed 6 shutout innings, and the Foresters won their third straight game 5-0 over the MLB Academy Barons, second in a row by shutout.

Souza got started early, driving in Kaden Peterson in the top of the first for a quick 1-0 lead, where the score remained until the eighth inning.

“I feel like it’s good to be back on a winning streak again after taking two tough losses. Good for the team to get some confidence back,” said Souza.

Camarillo turned in a huge effort to keep the Barons off the scoreboard. He had his offspeed working today, generating swings and misses all outing while fanning 6 batters.

“Slider felt good today… I was just trying to throw that over the plate consistently and early in counts. One of our sayings at Santa Barbara is ‘9 on 1.’ You got the guys behind you, just throw strikes, let ‘em hit it, and let our guys do the rest… I was just trying to get up there and give my team the best shot at winning,” said Camarillo.

With the score still 1-0 in the late innings, the ’Sters needed insurance, and Souza delivered once again. After Jonah Sebring singled to start the eighth inning, Souza elevated and celebrated, blasting a no-doubt two-run homer to give the ’Sters a 3-0 lead all by himself.

Will Rogers, Nick Oakley, and TJ Pompey tallied back-to-back-to-back singles, with Pompey’s driving in the two runners for a pair of RBIs, to plate two more insurance runs after Souza cleared the bases.

“I’ve kinda been in a little slump, so [today] I was just trying to stay short, be patient, stay in my zone,” said Pompey.

The ’Sters look to make it four in a row when they travel to take on the Conejo Oaks on Tuesday, July 9, at 4 p.m. Show out to Sparky Anderson Field to see your ’Sters or follow along on our radio broadcast on our YouTube Channel, https://www.youtube.com/@SantaBarbaraForesters19
